Mayor will miss tonight’s mayoral debate

While three mayor candidates — Judy Wasylycia-Leis, Brad Gross and Rav Gill — are taking part in a mayoral debate tonight dealing with poverty, housing, policing and food security, incumbent Mayor Sam Katz will be a no show.

All four candidates were invited to the debate, sponsored by the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, the Aboriginal Council of Winnipeg, Make Poverty History Manitoba and Winnipeg Harvest, takes place at the Indian and Metis Friendship Centre at 45 Robinson Ave., from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

But, according to the press release issued by the group, Katz “declined, stating a prior obligation.”

While Katz’s daily schedule says he will begin with waving at passing motorists at Confusion Corner today at 7:30 a.m., his last activity is scheduled for 5 p.m., and it is door knocking in the Charleswood and Tuxedo area.

The mayor’s schedule also includes waving at vehicles at the University of Winnipeg at 8:30 a.m., and an ArtsVote Debate and coffee party with citizens at noon.
