WINNIPEG – Winnipeg’s Cathy Overton-Clapham overcame deficits of 5-1 and 7-5 to defeat Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin 8-7 at Fort Rouge Curling Club this afternoon and advance to the final tonight of the $60,000 Manitoba Lotteries Womens Curling Classic.
Overton-Clapham will play Winnipeg’s Chelsea Carey, who won the afternoon’s other semi-final 5-4 over Saskatchewan’s Stefanie Lawton thanks to a final end steal. The final is scheduled for 5 p.m..
Playing in just their second bonspiel together as a new team, Overton-Clapham — supported by third Breanne Meakin, second Leslie Wilson and lead Raunora Westcott — was down 5-1 after just three ends but stormed back with a deuce in the fourth end and then back-to-back steals in the fifth and sixth ends to tie the game 5-5.
Nedohoin took control again with a deuce in the seventh end, but Overton-Clapham put up a deuce of her own in the eighth end and then stole the extra for to complete the comeback.
Meanwhile, the final of the $58,000 Canad Inns Prairie Classic this evening in Portage La Prairie will be a rematch of last February’s Manitoba men’s final, with Jeff Stoughton taking on Mike McEwen at the Portage Curling Club. Game time is 6 p.m.. Stoughton won the 2010 Manitoba men’s final over McEwen.
Stoughton advanced to the final with a 6-2 win this afternoon over his former second, Brandon’s Rob Fowler, while McEwen advanced with a 6-5 extra end win over Stoughton’s former third, Kevin Park, in the day’s other semi-final.
