WINNIPEG – An estimated 70,000 to 80,000 people lined Portage Avenue and thousands more turned out along Main Street and at The Forks Saturday evening for the 101st annual Santa Claus parade.
And the Big Guy didn’t disappoint. Santa brought up the rear of a near record-long parade — with 101 floats plus cadet marching bands, with drums and bagpipes — shouting out his jolly "Ho Ho Ho" and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.
The event is the biggest show of the pre-Christmas season in Winnipeg.
The average number of floats annually is about 75, but organizers said that this year, the parade was riding the wave of enthusiasm from last year when over 100 floats signed up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Christmas tradition.
The parade route followed a 10-block length east on Portage Avenue to Main Street and turned up Main Street for the final leg into The Forks, where fireworks capped the evening.
Families, couples and kids started lining the streets around 4 p.m. Santa passed the iconic downtown Bay store at Portage and Memorial Avenue two-and-a-half hours later.
