Award-winning author Ivan Coyote will be the University of Winnipeg’s Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence for 2011.
Coyote, who was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon, has authored six collections of short stories and one novel, Bow Grip; she has also released three CDs and four short films. A noted storyteller and performer, she has also mentored writers at Capilano College, Carleton University and the Vancouver Public Library.
As writer-in-residence, she will have an office in the U of W’s English department and will meet with writing students and members of the public from January to April, 2011. Coyote will read from her work on Jan. 27 at Convocation Hall, and will also deliver the Carol Shields Distinguished Lecture on March 16. Both events are open to the public and free of charge.
Coyote is the U of W’s sixth writer-in-residence. Past writers in the program include Margaret Sweatman, Sandra Birdsell, John Weier, Maria Campbell and David Bergen.
