MORRIS – Manitoba’s Terry McNamee needs a win over Northern Ontario’s Craig Kochan Thursday night to guarantee his team will live on to fight another day here at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship at the Morris Curling Club.

Manitoba’s round-robin record fell to 7-3 Thursday afternoon in a 5-4 loss to New Brunswick’s Charlie Sullivan that saw Manitoba come apart in the final end.

Leading 4-3 and needing only to keep the tenth end clean, the first rock of the end from Manitoba lead Lisa Blixhavn picked up some debris and instead ground to a halt in front of the house and formed a perfect centre-guard.

Things went from bad to worse from there, with Manitoba misses from second Allan Lawn and third Lana Hunter leaving New Brunswick lying two behind cover when McNamee went to throw his last.

McNamee’s attempt to draw a port crashed out front and New Brunswick got the game-winning deuce they needed to improve to 7-3 and keep their team’s playoff hopes alive heading into Thursday night.

Manitoba completes their round-robin against Northern Ontario Thursday night, but there is also one final round-robin draw Friday morning.

Prince Edward Island leads the field at 8-1 heading into tonight, followed by Nova Scotia at 7-2 and New Brunswick, Manitoba and Ontario at 7-3. Only the top three teams at the conclusion of the round-robin advance to the playoff round.

“That’s the way it goes,” McNamee said after the New Brunswick loss. “But we’ve got one left and if we win that, we’ll be OK.”
