She had a joyous Thanksgiving wedding, but the beaming bride will be buried before Christmas.
An alleged drunk driver was charged after the death of Andrea Bannish, 28, of Selkirk, only five weeks after she married her longtime boyfriend, Daniel Bannish.
Police said they arrested a man from the RM of St. Andrews after a 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup truck crashed into Bannish’s 1999 Volkswagen at a Selkirk intersection Thursday.
“She was such a caring person. She had so many friends, and if you weren’t friends with her, you wanted to be friends with her,” said Rachelle Northwood, 22, who was a close friend of Bannish. She was known to her loved ones as “Andi.”
Northwood said her friend grew up in Lockport and had a ferocious sense of humour. Bannish dated her husband for years before they married. She posed in cowboy boots while wearing her shiny strapless wedding dress.
“I’m in shock about it,” said Northwood. “Drinking and driving is so pointless.”
A relative of Bannish, who did not want to be identified, said funeral arrangements were being made Friday.
“This is killing my whole family,” said the relative.
A family friend said Friday that Bannish’s newlywed husband was too grief-stricken to be interviewed. She had worked as a saleswoman at Pineridge Hollow’s retail store until last summer.
“It’s obviously very tragic news and has hit us all very hard,” owner Janice Regehr said. “She was just a real light. She had a wonderful laugh.”
RCMP spokesman Const. Miles Hiebert said impaired driving ruins lives. “The cost in human life is so tragic, and it’s so preventable… “
Sean Nicholas Messner, 22, is charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death. He was released is scheduled to appear in court in January.
Police said Messner wasn’t hurt.
