Winnipeg teams ruled curling’s cashspiel circuit Monday.
Rinks skipped by Jennifer Jones, Mike McEwen, Reid Carruthers and Shauna Streich took home first-prize cheques from World Curling Tour events across Canada.
Jones defeated longtime adversary Kelly Scott 6-4 in an extra end to win the Sun Life Financial Invitational Classic in Brantford, Ont.
Jones and Scott, who have faced off against one another since their junior days in the mid-1990s, have combined to win the last six Scotties Tournament of Hearts championships. Although Jones has won four of those national titles, Scott led 11-8 in head-to-head matches dating back to 2005 — the year Jones won her first title.
On Monday, Jones took control of the game with back-to-back steals in the third and fourth ends to take a 3-2 lead and never trailed the rest of the way. Scott tied the game with a single in the eighth, but Jones used the hammer to score two in the extra end and win the Asham World Curling Tour event.
Jones got off to a shaky start in Brantford, losing two of her first three games, but ran the table on the C-side to reach the playoffs. She beat Amber Holland of Kronau, Sask., 7-2 in the quarter-finals and Kristen Wall of Oakville, Ont., 7-3 in the semis.
McEwen won the men’s side of the Sun Life spiel with a 7-5 win over the Randy Ferbey/Brad Gushue squad from St. John’s, N.L. After giving up a steal of three in the first end, McEwen scored five of the next six points to take the lead. A score of two sealed the win.
Monday night in Stonewall, Winnipeg’s Carruthers won the Interlake Pharmacy Classic with a 4-3 win over defending champion David Bohn in an all-Winnipeg matchup. After Bohn took a 2-1 lead with a steal of one in the fourth, Carruthers responded with the only deuce of the game in the sixth. Carruthers used last rock to score the winning point in the eighth.
Streich won another all-Winnipeg battle to win the women’s side in Stonewall. She built a 4-1 lead against Jill Thurston and hung on for a 5-3 win.
