A day of outrage from angry customers prompted Shaw TV to reverse its decision to charge for the popular yule log program that’s traditionally been broadcast on basic cable channels.

The company decided to move the long-running image of a log burning in a fireplace to video-on-demand channels. It wanted to charge customers 99 cents for one hour and 55 minutes of the program. Shaw said it would match its customers’ payments and donate the proceeds to local charities.

The Internet lit up with angry Shaw customers berating the company for charging for a service that’s been free for years.

“In this age of social media and conversation, we were able to quickly hear the voice of our customers and have taken action,” Shaw president Peter Bissonnette said in a release issued Friday.

The yule log is burning until Jan. 2 on Shaw’s basic digital channels.
