WINNIPEG – Canada’s national men’s bandy team, based in Winnipeg, has won its first game at the 2011 World Bandy Championships in Kazan, Russia.
Team Canada, the defending ‘B’ pool champion, defeated Hungary 14-3 at Raketa Stadium on Monday.
Bandy is played on an ice surface the size of a soccer pitch, in which players wear skates and use a curved stick and a ball about the size of a baseball. The Team Canada players say it is best described as a sport similar to field hockey and soccer combined on ice.
Canadian goaltender Michael Lintick set a World Bandy Championship record as he picked up three first assists. Canada plays again Tuesday against Latvia in the tournament which will be concluded Jan. 30.
The other ‘B’ pool teams include Netherlands and Belarus. The ‘A’ pool is composed of Russia, USA, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Kazakhstan.
