LONDON, ONT. – Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton improved to 5-0 here at the Tim Hortons Brier Monday afternoon, dropping Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs 8-4.

The victory came in Manitoba’s only game of the day and means they will head into Tuesday with no less than at least a share of first place.

And they’ll also do it with a skip who was at his snarkiest here today. Asked where his team is right now after five wins over weak opponents, Stoughton dripped sarcasm. “Well, we’re at the John Labatt Centre in the media scrum. That’s where I am. The other guys? One guy might be taking a pee, I don’t know what the other guys are doing.”

Stoughton, who had blown out each of his opponents heading into the Northern Ontario game, faced a mild challenge in Jacobs. With Stoughton playing his most inconsistent game of this event – he shot just 77 percent – the score was tied until the seventh end when Stoughton took advantage of a Jacobs miss to draw the four-foot for what proved to be a decisive three-ender.

Stoughton’s five victories so far have come against the event doormats. His five opponents to date have a combined win-loss record of 6-17.

Alberta’s Kevin Martin, the only other remaining undefeated team in the field, improved to 4-0 Monday afternoon with a 9-2 win over a woeful PEI squad skipped by Eddie Mackenzie.

Alberta could equal Manitoba’s 5-0 mark with a victory tonight. Martin plays Newfoundland’s Brad Gushue in a battle of Olympic gold medallists.

Stoughton plays two games tomorrow – taking on NWT’s Jamie Koe on the morning draw and then faces his toughest test of this event so far when he takes on three-time world champion Glenn Howard of Ontario on Tuesday evening’s draw.
