Unprecedented overland flooding hits rural North Dakota

FARGO, N.D. — North Dakota’s largest city may be safe and dry this weekend, but rural Cass County is experiencing unprecedented overland flooding that has closed Interstate 29 and isolated many homes.

Flooding in Cass Country stretches 16 kilometres inland from the Red River, county administrator Bonnie Johnson said this afternoon.

Interstate 29 north of Fargo, which has been partly submerged for two days, will close at 5:30 p.m. Earlier today, northbound traffic was backed up three kilometres form Harwood, N.D.

At least 100 kilometres of Cass County roads are under water, Johnson said.

Motorists may check North Dakota Highways road conditions at www.dot.nd.gov.

Most of the isolated residents in the county remain protected by sandbag dikes and are using offroad vehicles or boats to reach their homes.

But sheriffs were forced to conduct two rescues using airboats — one of a boy on a stranded tractor and another of a family of five near Argusville, Johnson said.
