Jeff Stoughton’s dream season will include at least one more medal haul.
Stoughton and his World Curling Championship squad of Jon Mead, Reid Carruthers, Steve Gould, Garth Smith and Norm Gould from the Charleswood Curling Club will be feted this afternoon at City Hall as Mayor Sam Katz presents them with Outstanding Achievement Awards and the Mayor’s Award for Sports Excellence.
The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m.
The Stoughton foursome will be honoured for an incredible season that included winning the world championship earlier this month in Regina with a 6-5 victory over Scotland’s Tommy Brewster. It was the second world title for Stoughton, now 47, and the first for Manitoba since his first championship in 1996.
The Outstanding Achievement award will honour their performance in the Brier, while the Mayor’s Award will applaud their Worlds win.
The only other men’s team to have captured two world championships was Don Duguid’s crew of Rod Hunter, Jim Pettapiece and Bryan Wood in 1970-71.
The world title is the first for Mead and Carruthers and marks the second for Steve Gould, who was part of Stoughton’s championship 15 years ago.
Stoughton and his crew have just completing a whirlwind tour of events that included winning the province, Brier and world championship and an appearance at the Players’ Championship in Grande Prairie this past weekend that ended with a 5-4 loss to Kevin Koe in the quarterfinal.
