Another Manitoba MLA has decided not to seek re-election.
Bonnie Korzeniowski, NDP member for St. James since 1999, made the announcement in a press release this morning.
Korzeniowski was named in 2008 as Manitoba’s first Special Envoy for Military Affairs by former premier Gary Doer.
“Bonnie’s support of the military and experience in the front lines of health care have made her a strong representative in the legislature,” Premier Greg Selinger said in a statement. “She has ensured that veterans’ voices are heard here in Manitoba.”
Selinger said Korzeniowski is also known as an advocate for seniors and was instrumental in securing improvements to St. James day cares, seniors’ homes and recreational facilities.
Korzeniowski’s decision to retire from provincial politics brings the number of NDP incumbents who are moving on to six. The party holds 36 seats in the 57-seat legislature.
Five Conservative MLAs have also indicated that they won’t run on Oct. 4.
