WINNIPEG — Hours before the first-year players take the field, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have locked a prospect they hope will be at the top of the rookie class.

The CFL club announced they have come to terms with non-import wide receiver Jade Etienne today. The speedster from the University of Saskatchewan was selected fourth overall by the Bombers in the CFL college draft last month.

“I’m very excited to sign a contract with the Blue Bombers,” Etienne said in a statement. “It is a dream come true to play professional football and I am thrilled to have an opportunity to help this team win a championship.”

Terms of the multi-year deal were not announced. The 6-foot-3, 184-pound pass catcher from Regina finished third in the CIS with 721 receiving yards on 28 receptions in just seven games last season. It’s hoped he will challenge for a starting spot in the Bombers offence this season.

“Jade is a young receiver with plenty of upside,” Bombers GM Joe Mack offered. “He is a big target with tremendous athletic ability, and he can make the tough catches. We are pleased to add him to our roster and watch him develop into the player we anticipate.”

The Bombers also announced the signings of import defensive backs C.J. James and Leslie Majors. All three players expected to be on the field today when the Bombers start rookie camp at the University of Manitoba.
