As the flood waters rose, confidence sank — at least, that’s what is suggested by the monthly Business Barometer released by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

The Business Barometer, which reveals small-business optimism in Manitoba, continued to drop after a strong finish to last year and a continued surge in the early months of 2011. Due in part to the severe flooding in Manitoba this spring, the provincial index decreased by 1.8 points in May to 72.5, compared to 74.3 in April. However, Manitoba’s small-business optimism remains ahead of the national index, which sits at 66.9 after dropping substantially from its April high of 70.7.

Small businesses in Alberta are the most optimistic in the country, with an index of 76.6, followed by Saskatchewan at 74.3.
