WINNIPEG – Gene Simmons has joined Roddy Piper, Henry Winkler and Shannen Doherty in the annals of celebrities honoured by the Office of the Mayor in Winnipeg.

The Kiss frontman and reality TV star was awarded the key to the city this afternoon by St. Vital Coun. Gord Steeves, acting on behalf of Mayor Sam Katz.

“I just wanted to thank you and point out you’re a powerful and attractive man,” Simmons said to Steeves outside the mayor’s office at city hall, where a crowd of fans gathered to see the musician and his partner Shannon Tweed, a co-star on TV’s Gene Simmons: Family Jewels.

A mobile phone rang seconds later.

“I’m sorry, did this press conference interrupt your cellphone?” quipped Simmons, who went on to plug his speaking engagement tonight.

Katz is in Israel, where he attended a conference.
