Desiree Scott of Winnipeg will play in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup of soccer which opens in Germany on June 26.
Scott, a 23-year-old midfielder, was named to the team on Thursday when head coach Carolina Morace announced the 21 players who will represent Canada in the world’s biggest women’s sporting event June 26-July 17 in nine German cities.
Canada’s opening round opponents are host Germany (June 26 in Berlin), France (June 30 in Bochum) and Nigeria (July 5 in Dresden).
Scott, the assistant coach with the University of Manitoba Bisons women’s soccer team, is a former member of the Bisons team and capped her five-year career being named Bisons Sports female athlete of the year in 2009-2010.
Scott has previously made 22 appearances with Team Canada but this will be her first participation in a World Cup.
