Two hundred Canadian Forces soldiers have been called in by the province to help with flood-fighting efforts in Souris in anticipation of the expected river crest July 5.

“The Town of Souris asked the provincial government for additional resources and, given the short time frame and the need to quickly mobilize resources, I authorized the request to the Department of National Defence for military support,” Premier Greg Selinger said in a prepared statement.

The earthen dike still needs to be topped up with sandbags and more workers are required.

It’s expected the soldiers will begin work early this afternoon.
