A strong defensive performance by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers has landed two members of the secondary into the weekly CFL awards pool.
Defensive back Alex Suber was named the defensive player of the week, the league announced today. Suber, a second-year Bomber, registered six tackles and ran an interception back for a 66-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter in Winnipeg’s 24-16 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Canada Day.
Safety Ian Logan was named Canadian player of the week thanks to his two interceptions in the game.
Montreal SB Jamel Richardson was named the offensive player of the week, while B.C. KR Tim Brown picked up special teams player of the week honours.
Injuries are still a big part of the storyline for the Blue and Gold.
Starters SB Terrence Edwards (arm), WR Kito Poblah (knee), WR Greg Carr (hamstring), DE Odell Willis (groin), and DB Jovon Johnson (hip pointer) — all injured in the Hamilton game — are not practising with the team this morning.
The club officially placed Poblah and S Brady Browne (biceps) on the nine-game injured reserve list.
Winnipeg also officially announced the signing of WR Alex Watson this morning.
The Bombers (1-0) take on the Toronto Argonauts (1-0) at Canad Inns Stadium Friday evening (6:30 p.m.).
