It’s two trades in two days for Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff.
On Saturday, Cheveldayoff acquired tough guy Kenndal McArdle from the Florida Panthers in exchange for prospect Angelo Esposito. Friday, the Jets made a deal with the Washington Capitals for right-winger Eric Fehr of Winkler.
McArdle, 24, has played 33 games in the last three seasons for the Panthers. The left-winger spent most of his time with the AHL’s Rochester Americans, where he complied 34 goals and 68 points to go with 279 penalty minutes in 166 games.
The former Vancouver Giants WHL player was a member of Team Canada for the World Juniors in 2007, when he won a gold medal at the tournament in Sweden.
McArdle was a first-round pick of the Panthers in 2005, 20th overall.
He is presently a restricted free agent, so another player Cheveldayoff will need to sign. McArdle was on a two-way deal last season that paid him a little more than $800,000 for his NHL time.
Esposito, who was Pittsburgh’s first-round pick of the 2007 draft, has played the last two seasons with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves but hasn’t been very productive, largely because of serious knee injuries.
He played 12 games in the 2009-10 season and last season, had three goals and 13 points in 57 games. The struggles had knocked him off the chart of the top 10 Thrashers prospects in the most recent edition of The Hockey News Future Watch.
Also over the weekend, a league source confirmed the Jets have offered an assistant coach’s position to Ray Edwards, who was the head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes AHL affiliate in San Antonio last season.
If Edwards accepts, he’d join the staff of new Jets head coach Claude Noel and assistant Charlie Huddy, whose appointment has yet to be announced.
