Thousands of homes in the Fort Rouge and River Heights area were left without power in the early morning hours today due to a malfunction in Manitoba Hydro’s substation in the Grant Avenue and Stafford Street area.

The power outages occurred about midnight and the substation shut down at 1:30 a.m., affecting about 5,000 homes in one of the hottest nights in the city so far this summer.

Anita Mitchell, spokesperson for Manitoba Hydro, said they are still investigating what went wrong, adding “from a public safety point of view, we had to shut down the substation.”

Power was restored to about 1,600 homes just before 6 a.m. from an alternate source and the remaining 3,400 homes had power by 9 a.m.
