THAT foot injury Doug Brown was describing as recently as Tuesday as no big deal may yet turn out to be.

The Bombers defensive tackle did not practise for the second day in a row on Wednesday and revealed afterward it is now not clear whether he will play Friday against the Edmonton Eskimos.

“It’s one of those tenuous things,” said Brown. “It’s kind of a day-by-day thing right now. We’re going to give myself as much time to recover as possible and we’ll see on game day what the deal is. We want to make sure I have every opportunity to play and so this week the most ideal thing for it has been rest.”

Brown said he can’t specify the exact nature of the injury. “It’s a foot injury. That’s as detailed as I’ve been told to explain to you.”

“We’ll see how he feels (today),” said Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice. “If he can perform at a high level, he’ll play. If not, we’ll fix it.”

Brown has been having an exceptional season even by his high standards. He’s fifth on the team in tackles with 14 and is tied for third in the league in sacks with three. If Brown cannot suit up on Friday, non-import Don Oramasionwu is the most likely candidate to take his spot along the interior line.

Brown said the injury occurred during the team’s 25-20 win over the B.C. Lions at Canad Inns Stadium last Thursday. The 11-year Bomber veteran said the last time he missed a game due to injury was in 2007.

Bombers defensive end Odell Willis has been named the CFL’s defensive player of the month for July.

Willis, 26, leads the league in sacks with seven and has tracked down opposing quarterbacks at least once in all five of the Bombers regular season games so far. He also ranks sixth on the Bombers in tackles with 11.

“I’ve still got a lot of work to do,” Willis said Wednesday. “Defensive player of the year sounds even better.”

Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Ricky Ray is the offensive player of the month, Hamilton Tiger-Cats kicker Justin Medlock got the nod for special teams and Eskimos running back Jerome Messman was named the Canadian player of the month.

With speculation continuing to swirl that quarterback Buck Pierce may have suffered more than just a calf injury prior to being pulled from the B.C. game, Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice was asked by a reporter on Wednesday if Pierce had undergone a concussion test following the game — something that would be standard protocol if Pierce was suspected of having suffered one.

This was LaPolice’s response: “I know he was woozy out there, but I don’t think we tested him.”

Pierce has practised with the first unit the last two days and is expected to start against Edmonton on Friday.
