Scholarships awarded to local golfers

Eight local golfers have been selected as recipients of the 2011 Manitoba Golf Scholarship Fund Inc. scholarships.

The scholarships are awarded to young golfers who have demonstrated academic excellence and are attending Canadian schools for their post-secondary education.

Lucas Wazney of the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club has been chosen as the winner of the $1,500 Dr. Daya Gupta Award for Outstanding Scholastic Achievement for obtaining the highest academic standing of all of this year’s applicants. Wazney is a student in the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Civil Engineering.

There were seven scholarships of $1,000 each awarded to seven students.

Bryce Barr of the Southwood Golf and Country Club is in the U of M’s Faculty of Science with a major in biochemistry. He finished in a tie for third at the 2010 Manitoba Junior Men’s Championship and represented Manitoba at the Canadian Junior Men’s Championship.

Alex Crawford of the Breezy Bend Country Club is a student in the U of M’s Faculty of Commerce. He finished tied for third at the 2010 Manitoba Junior Men’s Championship and represented Manitoba at the Canadian Junior Men’s Championship.

Brodie Gobin of the Portage Golf Club is a commerce student at the U of M. He placed third at the Rural Junior Championship.

Mindy Lichtman of the St. Boniface Golf Club is studying in the U of M’s Faculty of Education and was the 2010 Manitoba Women’s Amateur Champion.

Joey Ringaert of the Niakwa Country Club is a student in the U of M’s Faculty of Medicine and competed in the 2010 Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship.

Bobby Wiebe of the Pine Ridge Golf Club is a commerce student at the U of M. He finished tied for 10th at the 2010 Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship.

Troy Woods of the South Interlake Golf and Country Club is a U of M commerce student.
