Charges have been laid in an arson which completely destroyed a vital grocery store and adult education centre Monday in the Berens River First Nation.

Harold McKay, 20, and a 17-year-old youth each face two counts of arson to property in connection with the blaze which RCMP believe was set around 5:30 a.m. Monday to the two buildings which stand about 180 metres apart.

No one was injured in the fires but the Office of the Fire Commissioner estimates damages to the Northern Store amounted to about $1.5 million while the Adult Education Buildling was worth $300, 000.

Berens River RCMP, the Winnipeg major crimes unit and the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner continue to investigate the fire, but don’t expect they will be pressing any further charges.

Berens River RCMP said Tuesday that local residents tried to save the store, as well as the nearby local Adult Education Building, but both structures were completely destroyed.

Carmi Werner, a Winnipegger who was in the community and saw the two fires, said the fire represents a huge loss to the community.

“The only way to get lots of goods in there is by ice roads and they won’t be open for months. Flying stuff in is very expensive,” he said.
