The Toews brothers are together again.
The Chicago Blackhawks made a trade on Friday, acquiring David Toews from the New York Islanders for future considerations. Toews, 21, is the younger brother of Blackhawks captain and NHL superstar Jonathan Toews.
“It’s been an interesting couple of days. I actually found out about the trade yesterday, but they weren’t going to announce it until today because I had to fly out to Toronto last night and drive out to Oshawa today with all the Chicago rookies,” David told The Free Press on Friday. “It’s been busy, but there’s a lot of excitement, too. My agent called me the other day and told me it might happen… I’m pretty happy about it.”
Toews was drafted by the Islanders in the third round (66th overall) in 2008 and had 20 goals and 28 assists in 60 games last year with the Brandon Wheat Kings. Prior to that, he played two years at the University of North Dakota.
Interestingly, Toews had spent most of the summer in Chicago training with his brother. And now with this latest development they are in the same organization.
“(Blackhawks GM) Stan Bowman called me and wanted me to know that they weren’t trying to do Johnny any favours,” said Toews. “He said they liked me as a player and they’re pretty familiar with me because I’ve been training in Chicago all summer. I know the training staff and the people around the rink pretty well. I’m excited to be a part of the Blackhawks and really looking forward to training camp now.”
Toews and the Blackhawks rookies will be on the ice Saturday night at the GM Centre in Oshawa against Toronto Maple Leafs prospects in the first game of the Leafs rookie tournament.
