Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Buck Pierce is the CFL offensive player of the week, the league announced Tuesday.
The 29-year-old pivot, in his second season in Blue and Gold, picked up the honour thanks to his part in Winnipeg’s 25-23 win over the Montreal Alouettes at Molson Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Pierce was 20-of-29 for 312 yards in the contest, throwing for two touchdowns and one interception as the Bombers snapped a two-game losing streak and distanced themselves from the Alouettes. With seven games left to play, Winnipeg (8-3) sits four points up on Montreal (6-5) in the race for first place in the East division standings.
“I think it’s important to take it in, when these accolades come your way,” said Pierce, who also ran the ball three times for 24 yards against Montreal. “You work and you strive for these things. Is it the most important thing? No. The most important thing is that we got the win. I need to continue to improve and play better for us to get to where we need to go.”
It’s the second time the New Mexico State–product has picked up the weekly offensive player honour. Pierce first won the award following a come-from-behind 33-24 win over the Toronto Argonauts in Week 4.
The Bombers took a day off from the field Tuesday. They’ll return to practice Wednesday, in preparation for a game against the Argos at Rogers Centre Saturday.
