The praise won’t be as readily forthcoming once the games start for real this NHL season, but take a bow, Winnipeg Jets fans, you’ve caught the eye of another team in the league.
Wednesday’s crowd of 15,004 at the MTS Centre to watch the Jets defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1 drew complimentary words from the ‘Canes’ coach, Paul Maurice.
“It was a great atmosphere for us,” Maurice said. “In some ways, you don’t like the final result but what you want to do is put these players in an NHL game, and it’s difficult to do that in the exhibition season. What we had was a real NHL atmosphere, it was a regular-season-feeling game and it does change the way some guys play.”
Maurice gave positive reviews to some of his charges, especially goalie Brian Boucher, who faced 38 Jets shots, as well as forwards Jiri Tlusty and Tim Brent, who had Carolina’s goal.
“To be honest with you, everything else probably felt the way it probably would over the course of a game,” Maurice said, alluding to the fact his team only dressed nine veteran players and certainly not as strong a lineup as the one that defeated the Jets 4-0 in Charlotte. N.C. on Sunday.
Today, the Jets are back on the ice for practice, preparing for Friday’s final pre-season game, a 7:30 start at the MTS Centre against the Nashville Predators.
