WINNIPEG – Downtown residents and heritage advocates have lost their bid to stop the development of a boutique hotel on Waterfront Drive.
In July, the city council’s downtown, heritage and riverbank committee voted unanimously to allow Sunstone Boutique Hotels to build a 67-room inn at the long-vacant Alexander Docks site and convert the adjacent Harbourmaster Building to a 100-seat restaurant.
This morning, condo dwellers told council’s appeal committee that the proposed hotel would block their river view, and that the city should preserve existing downtown greenspace.
Heritage advocates said the plot of land is linked to the 1919 General Strike and Scottish history.
After several hours, Couns. Ross Eadie (Mynarski) and Harvey Smith (Daniel McIntyre) voted in support of the residents and advocates. Couns. Paula Havixbeck (Charleswood-Tuxedo) and Thomas Steen (Elmwood) voted against.
The tie vote means the appeal is lost and the proposed hotel development can go ahead.
