Fire and police are investigating the cause of a fire outside Laura Secord School in Winnipeg’s Wolseley neighbourhood this afternoon.

The fire was reported just after 1 p.m.

A spokesperson with Winnipeg School Division said all students have been evacuated to nearby Robert A. Steen Community Centre at 980 Palmerston Ave. Parents are asked to pick up their children as soon as possible.

Three children were taken to hospital to be checked out. One firefighter is being treated for smoke inhalation.

“The fire is under control,” said fire chief of operations Bill Smith.

“A large volume of Styrofoam outside the building caught fire — we don’t know why. Some windows were smashed and the smoke got inside but the structure wasn’t affected.”

Police say Wolseley Avenue is closed between Ruby Street and Arlington Street. Motorists are asked to avoid the area until further notice.

The school will be closed Thursday. Winnipeg School Division officials will have more to say on how long the school will remain closed, once they get inside the building tomorrow.
