Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation has a new chief, Ken Henry, elected with 107 votes in a by- election Wednesday, according to figures supplied by his campaign.

The First Nation’s custom council called the election after they voted to remove Terry Nelson as chief last month. No figures were made available by the council on the election results.

Henry, who is from Roseau but lives in Winnipeg, came within 40 votes of unseating Nelson in his last bid for the leadership in March.

Nelson did not run this time.

The closest rival was Lawrence Henry, a councillor under the Nelson administration, with 57 votes, according to Henry’s campaign. The campaign also said two other candidates pulled in 30 votes.

Voter turn out dropped between the election in March and the one this week. In the last election 555 ballots were cast out of an eligible 1,436 registered voters. The turnout this time was 194 votes.

Roseau, located 100 kilometres south of Winnipeg, recently settled an illegal surrender land claim with the federal government for $80 million.
