The Jets have sent first-round draft pick Mark Scheifele back to junior.

The NHL team announced this morning that the 18-year-old’s stint in the NHL has ended after seven games this season. Scheifele had one goal in those seven games and rejoins the OHL’s Barrie Colts as of today.

His first possible game will be Wednesday when Barrie visits Belleville.

Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said today that Scheifele, despite the obvious disappointment, was still smiling today after getting the news.

“He hasn’t changed one single bit from the moment we drafted him,” Cheveldayoff said. “He has not taken anything for granted, and he’s going to continue to work hard.”

Scheifele’s ice time had slowly gone down during his Winnipeg stay, and he played just 7:21 in Saturday’s 5-3 win over Carolina.

The seventh-overall pick from last June’s draft rejoins his improved junior team, which is 6-4 in the first 10 games. The Colts missed the playoffs last season.

“He’s going to be an impact player in junior,” Cheveldayoff said. “With that comes the pressures of leading a team and the expectations of producing all the time. Those are the things that when he becomes an NHL player, things like that are going to be his responsibility all the time.

“It’s a development process, and when you sit back and put it into perspective, at 18 years old, that’s a big feather in his cap to have earned the opportunity to play the seven games here this year,” Cheveldayoff said.
