McEwen squeaks out victory in Dauphin

DAUPHIN — Second seed Mike McEwen survived a major scare here Wednesday morning on the opening draw of the 2012 Safeway Men’s Provincial Curling Championship.

Leading Dauphin’s Glen Toews 4-1 through four ends, McEwen gave up a game-tying three-ender to Toews in the fifth end. The teams traded singles from there and the game was tied 6-6 heading into the tenth end when McEwen used the hammer to score a single and squeak out a 7-6 victory.

• Rossmere’s Dean Dunstone thrashed East St. Paul’s Rob Atkins 8-2;
• Dauphin’s Rae Kujanpaa lost to Manitoba men’s champion Dave Elias 10-9 in an extra end; and
• Arborg’s Kyle Foster beat former world junior champion David Hamblin 8-3.

The second draw gets underway at 12:15 p.m. Former Canadian mixed champion Sean Grassie plays Pembina’s Dave Johnson, St. Vital’s Bruce Jones plays three-time Manitoba mens champion Rob Fowler, Stonewall’s Jared Kolomaya plays Pinawa’s Richard Muntain, Carman’s Dean North plays Neepawa’s Kelly Robertson and Deer Lodge’s Willie Lyburn plays Curtis McCannell of Pilot Mound.

Top seed and defending world champion Jeff Stoughton does not play his first game until the 4 p.m. draw, when he takes on Flin Flon’s Brad Hyrich.
