On the first day of CFL free agency, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-signed import offensive lineman Glenn January to a contract extension.

January, only 28, has been with the Bombers since the 2009 season. He was eligible to become a free agent at 11 a.m. Wednesday, but as expected, decided to stay with the Blue and Gold. The Texas Tech-product appeared in all 18 regular season games and both playoff games in 2011, returning to his starting spot on the O-line after missing the 2010 season with a torn pectoral muscle.

The 6-5, 310-pound tackle was named an East Division all-star last year.

“Coming off a serious injury to being named a divisional all-star is something to be proud of and we’re very happy we were able to keep another member of our offensive line in tact,” Bombers GM Joe Mack said in a statement.

The Bombers now have three offensive line starters from the 2011 season locked up for the 2012 campaign. January joins guard Steve Morley (who re-signed Tuesday) and centre Obby Khan, who was already under contract.

Winnipeg was reportedly close to finalizing a deal with import receiver Greg Carr, but that has since fallen apart. The two sides were thought to have come to an agreement of terms late Wednesday afternoon. Sources have confirmed that a deal between Carr and Edmonton Eskimos is now likely to happen.

Carr, 26, has spent the last season and a half with the Bombers and was one of the move coveted American player on the market. The Florida State-product — a giant pass catcher at 6-foot-6, 214-pounds — had been effective in the Bombers offence but has had a hard time staying healthy in his time in Winnipeg.

He caught 46 passes for 648 yards and four touchdowns in 11 games last season. In 18 career games with the Bombers, Carr had 77 catches for 1,216 yards and eight touchdowns.

Another player to leave the Bombers: Non-import defensive lineman Don Oramasionwu, who has taken his services to the Eskimos.

The Winnipeg-native and former University of Manitoba Bison has spent the last three seasons with the Bombers, registering 39 defensive tackles, nine sacks and two fumble recoveries.

As of Wednesday evening, the two biggest free agent prizes on the markets — receiver Andy Fantuz and offensive lineman Brendon LaBatte — have yet to sign deals. LaBatte is reported to be close to inking a deal with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
