A Winnipeg cab driver wrestled with a fare who pointed a firearm at him early Sunday.

The incident began at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday when a man taking a cab pointed a firearm at the 42-year-old driver. The cabbie struggled with his fare and received a minor injury to his upper body, at which point the passenger demanded money from the driver and then fled with some cash, police said.

Several police officers responded to the call, in the area of Broadway and Young Street. The K-9 unit led officers to a nearby suite, where a suspect was taken into custody.

Earlier Sunday morning a man pointed a firearm at a gas station clerk in the 200-block of Sherbrook, police said.

Police have charged Terrance Jamie Traverse, 28, with a number of firearm related offences, including robbery with a firearm, two counts of pointing a firearm and breach of probation.

Traverse is being held in custody.
