SASKATOON — Manitoba’s Rob Fowler will play Alberta’s Kevin Koe in the semifinal here Saturday night (TSN, 7 p.m.) at the 2012 Tim Hortons Brier.

Alberta’s Koe advanced to face Manitoba’s Fowler with a 10-6 victory over his brother Jamie Koe of the Territories in the page playoff 3 vs 4 game Saturday afternoon.

Manitoba defeated Alberta during the round-robin Wednesday night. The winner tonight will advance to face Ontario’s Glenn Howard in Sunday evening’s Brier final. The loser tonight will play the Territories in Sunday morning’s bronze medal game.

A steal by Kevin Koe in the seventh end and then a steal of four more in the eighth end sealed the deal for Alberta over an upstart Territories foursome who made history Saturday by becoming the first team from the north to ever compete in the Brier playoffs.

Saturday’s game also marked the first time in Brier history that two brothers have skipped against each other in the Brier playoffs. It wasn’t easy beating your own brother, Alberta’s Koe said after the game.

“It’s mixed (feelings) for sure. I’m proud of those guys — they had a great week,” Kevin Koe told TSN.

It wasn’t immediately clear who would play third for Alberta against Manitoba tonight. Alberta third Pat Simmons has been ailing all week with a stomach bug and was clearly labouring against the Territories Saturday afternoon.

Kevin Koe said he wasn’t sure if Simmons would play tonight or if alternate Blake MacDonald, with whom Koe won a world championship in 2010, would substitute into the lineup.

“He doesn’t seem to be getting better. He seems to be getting worse,” Koe said of Simmons.
