It took longer than expected but the Winnipeg Blue Bombers finally locked up head coach Paul LaPolice to a contract extension.
The deal is for two years and sees LaPolice stay on to coach the Bombers through the 2014 season. He was heading into the final year of his original three-year contract he signed prior to the 2010 campaign.
“I’m thrilled to get this agreement done and remain the head coach for years to come,” LaPolice said in a statement Tuesday. “I am very confident that we are a team on the rise and look forward to continued success. This is a great organization with an amazing fan base, and a great core of young players.
It’s been an eventful two years for LaPolice as the Bombers sideline boss. Coming off a miserable 4-14 first season that challenged his patience and confidence, LaPolice orchestrated one of the biggest turnarounds in CFL history, guiding the Blue and Gold to a 10-8 record and an East Division title before falling short in the Grey Cup against the B.C. Lions.
LaPolice was nominated for coach of the year last season.
“Over his first two seasons as head coach, he has shown tremendous progress and leadership, and an obvious ability to overcome adversity and steer our team in the right direction,” Bombers GM Joe Mack said.
