Evan Laye of the Selkirk Steelers has been chosen as the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s recipient of the 2012 RBC Junior A Scholarship, an award of $1,000 to be used towards post-secondary education.
Laye and the other nine winners from the junior A leagues across the country, all members of the Canadian Junior Hockey League, will now be considered for the national Junior A RBC Scholarship. That award is worth $5,000 and will be presented at the 2012 RBC Royal Bank Cup national championship in May.
The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic and on-ice achievements as well as community involvement.
Laye, 20, is in his third season with the Steelers while working towards completing a degree in Environmental Sciences at the University of Manitoba.
In the Selkirk community, Laye volunteered with various initiatives including the Selkirk Children’s Festival, Selkirk Aboriginal Day, Nova House Women’s Shelter, the Red River Christmas Hamper Drive and hockey skills development events.
Laye, who played his minor hockey in Selkirk, has future plans to start an environmental consulting firm with goals to improve the sustainability and conservation of natural resources.
“Evan Laye epitomizes what the MJHL is all about. He is a committed student athlete. Our league promotes quality on the ice, combined with education. There were a number of excellent applicants for this award,” MJHL commissioner Kim Davis said in a statement.
Previous winners of the RBC Scholarship have been Adam Stoykewych (Selkirk Steelers), Steven Shamanski (Dauphin Kings), Eric DeLong (Portage Terriers), Gavin McHale (Portage), Sean Kliewer (Portage) and goaltender Bo Storozuk (Swan Valley).
To be eligible for the RBC Junior A Scholarship, a player must be a Canadian citizen, on a Canadian Junior A team roster, and registered in or applying for full-time post-secondary studies.
Past winners of the National RBC Scholarship include Dany Heatley (San Jose Sharks) and Jeff Tambellini (Vancouver Canucks).
