The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed a contract extension with import cornerback Jovon Johnson, last season’s CFL defensive player of the year, the club announced Thursday morning.

“I’m very excited to remain a Bomber beyond next season,” Johnson said in a statement released by the team. “This organization gave me an opportunity in 2008 and I am very grateful for that. We were so close to achieving our ultimate goal last season and I think this year we are in a great position to move to the next level.”

The contract extension comes just days after Johnson used his Twitter account to lament the club’s failure to sign him to an extension as he headed into his option year — and a couple of months after Johnson complained to the Free Press that he felt he was being unappreciated by the Bombers after a historic season that saw Johnson become the first defensive back in CFL history to be named the league’s most outstanding defensive player.

“Clearly, Jovon Johnson is one of the marquee players in this league and we are thrilled to lock him down for the forseeable future,” Bombers GM Joe Mack said in a statement Thursday. “His versatility to play special teams in addition to his regular role on defence makes him an even greater asset for us. We are looking for him to take a larger leadership role this season and are confident he is in a position to do so.

Johnson led the CFL in 2011 with eight interceptions — returning two for touchdowns. He also added 594 punt return yards to move up to fourth on the Bombers all-time list. The 2012 season will be Johnson’s fifth with the Bombers.

Johnson becomes the third player this week from last season’s East Division champion squad to sign a contract extension. On Wednesday, the club announced non-import receivers Kito Poblah and Cory Watson had signed extensions.
