LaPolice keeps practice brief on fourth day of training camp

Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice kept practice brief and to the point on Wednesday, giving his charges a break under the hot sun after three straight days of four-hour training camp marathons.

Practice at Canad Inns Stadium on Wednesday morning clocked in at barely one hour, with about half of that devoted to scrimmage under the watchful eye of CFL referee Al Bradbury.

As he has done in previous years, LaPolice had asked Bradbury to come to practice, run through some new rules with him and then officiate the scrimmage to give his players — in particular his rookies — a feel for how things work in the CFL.

Also on Wednesday, LaPolice hinted he might be changing the way the club reports injuries to the public this season. LaPolice has made several references during camp to players having “upper body injuries” and “lower body injuries” — the same format most hockey teams in the NHL use.

And he did it again today, reporting that offensive lineman Brendan Dunn — who did not practise Wednesday — had a “lower body” injury.

The Bombers — like every other team in the CFL — have always reported the specific locations of injuries — ankle, elbow, knee, shoulder, etc.

Asked point-blank if the terminology he has used this week means the team is changing the way they report injuries this season, LaPolice was non-committal.

“I might,” said LaPolice. “We’ll see,”

LaPolice said Dunn should be back at practice tomorrow.

In other news from sick bay, DE Jason Vega returned to practice today, but LB Marcellus Bowman — who left practice Tuesday with a “lower leg” injury — did not.

LaPolice said Bowman’s status will be checked every few days.

FIELDNOTES — Kicking with a strong tail wind, placekickers Justin Palardy and Eric Wilbur both hit from 47-yards… Safety Ian Logan intercepted an overthrown ball by QB Buck Pierce, while DB Darrell Pasco intercepted QB Joey Eliott… SB Terrence Edwards went over top of DB Jonathan Hefney to make a nice catch on a ball thrown by Pierce to the back of the endzone… The first team Bombers offensive line had Glenn January at left tackle, Chris Greaves at left guard, Chris Kowalczuk at centre, Steve Morley at right guard and Andre Douglas at right tackle.
