And on the sixth day of training camp, there was rain.

The skies opened up on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for both sessions at Canad Inns Stadium Friday, soaking players and coaches for a significant stretch during the first practice. Following the damp workout, the head coach was relatively pleased with how the camp has unfolded thus far and looking forward to some simulated game action.

Paul LaPolice told reporters. “We’ve stayed pretty much injury-free – knock on wood – and we’ve gotten good tempo, good work done. C We just have to keep coaching them and start seeing them play in exhibition games.”

This first preseason game won’t kick-off until next week (Thursday in Montreal), but the Bombers coaches will get a chance to see how some players perform in real football situations when they hold a no-huddle, controlled scrimmage Saturday morning. The scrimmage is scheduled to feature officials who will be on the lookout for infractions and the game clock will be used. The game will be a non-contact affair.

On the injury front, right tackle Andre Douglas was a spectator for the workouts Friday, missing time with what’s believed to be a hip injury. Canadian Paul Swiston saw all of the first-team work in Douglas’ spot.

Other Bombers trying to stay dry on the sidelines included defensive backs Deon Beasley, Alex Suber and Jeremy McGee; linebackers Marcellus Bowman and Rene Stephan; and defensive lineman Dorian Smith. All are day-to-day with various ailments. Brandon Stewart continues to be a ‘one-a-day’ participant; he worked out hard in the morning session and took the rest of the day off.

A new omission for Friday’s workout was slotback Jade Etienne, who was kept away from the field due to illness.

LaPolice expects to see some of the banged-up Bombers back on the field Saturday.
