Slater signs three-year contract with Jets

The Winnipeg Jets have got a head-start on the free-agent signing period, inking one of their own to a new three-year contract.Jim Slater, who would have been an unrestricted free agent in three weeks, has agreed to a new deal that gives him a healthy raise.Slater just finished a deal paid him US$1.1 million in the 2011-12 season. His new contract reportedly averages more than $1.5 million per season."It definitely shows commitment right back," Slater said late today. "It's great for both sides to have that."The 29-year-old centre from Lapeer, Mich., had a career-best 13 goals and finished with 21 points, also a high, in the season just finished.For most of the season, Slater centred the GST line in a checking role with Tanner Glass (also and unrestricted free agent) and Chris Thorburn.It was a solid bounce-back year for Slater, who missed the second half of 2010-11 in Atlanta because of a concussion.
