The Winnipeg Blue Bombers made a few more edits to the roster Friday, with a key veteran falling to the cutting room floor.
The Bombers released 12 players, with import linebacker Clint Kent the most surprising of the bunch. The 28-year-old, a fixture in the Winnipeg defence for the last two seasons, was with the club since the 2010 campaign, earning his spot on the team as a defensive back before switching to the strong-side linebacker position later that year.
A team captain last season, Kent was third on the club with 56 defensive tackles, and added 12 special teams tackles, a career-high four sacks and three pass knockdowns.
“I’m just completely shocked right now,” he said. “They didn’t give me any explanation, and they don’t have to, it’s just part of the business, I guess. It’s a crazy business. Realy, there’s nothing to say. I thought I had a great camp.”
Kent said he will explore other football options over the next few days.
As expected, the move sent shockwaves through the Bombers defence.
Via Twitter, safety Ian Logan: “At a loss for words. WOW. #WTF”
Defensive back Alex Suber as a little more succinct: “WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.”
Veteran import defensive lineman Dorian Smith was also released Friday morning. Smith was never the right fit in defensive co-ordinator Tim Burke’s defence and only appeared in seven games last season (he missed five games due to injury). More releases are expected as the day moves along.
Other Bombers cuts Friday include import defensive lineman Andre Caroll, non-import defensive lineman Ryan Lucas, import offensive lineman Shannon Boatman, non-import offensive lineman Brendan Dunn, import wide receivers Isaac Anderson and Doug Pierce, non-import receiver Cassidy Doneff, import linebacker Terrell Parker, import running back Bloi-Dei Dorzon and import defensive back Jeremy McGee.
League rules require the Bombers to declare their 46-man roster by Saturday evening (9 p.m.). The club is expected to set the practice roster (which can include up to seven players) on Saturday..
Winnipeg opens the 2012 regular season with four straight games on the road, starting with a June 29 tilt against the Grey Cup champion B.C. Lions in Vancouver.
