At first, a man at the scene of a horse and buggy accident on Friday night thought the horrifying scene was a fatal one.
The wagon travelling behind his horse wagon was rammed from behind by a car and tossed in the air. The crash left three boys injured, including the man’s 18-year-old grandson, who was found lying in the road.
“I was thinking he’s dead,” said the man, who would only identify himself as Bob. He was in the lead horse and buggy team and his grandson and two other young men were behind him when they were hit from behind on Highway 6 just north of St. Laurent.
“The wagon went up in the air and went up over the guy’s car,” said the man. “My grandson was lying the road.”
He is in the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg heavily medicated and waiting for test, he said. Another boy was taken to Stonewall for stitches. The third is stable and undergoing CT scans.
The families are waiting for more information and for RCMP to lay charges against the driver of the red car, he said. No horses were injured in the crash, police said earlier. The wagons were privately owned and out for an evening ride.
Police did not release any further information today.
