The development rights for two large downtown surface parking lots have been awarded to Artis/Longboat Group, the same partnership currently building the Centrepoint development at Portage and Donald.

Manitoba Public Insurance, the owners of the land, awarded the developers a one-year exclusive option to prepare firm development plans for the properties — a parking lot on Carlton Street between Graham Avenue and St. Mary Avenue and another on Donald Street south of St. Mary Avenue.

Marilyn McLaren, MPI’s chief executive officer, said the provincial Crown corporation intends to retain ownership of the properties.

The announcement comes just days after confirmation of the Winnipeg Convention Centre expansion was announced.

MPI’s request for expressions of interest on the properties called for mixed-use development in its documents.
