Buck Pierce thinks he can be back on the field in a month.

Visibly frustrated with yet another injury – this one involving torn ligaments and a torn muscle in his left foot – the Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback provided a much more optimistic timeline than the team gave earlier in the day, telling reporters at Canad Inns Stadium he expects to only miss a month of action. Earlier in the day, the club put his recovery time as "indefinite."

“They (the doctors) said about four weeks,” Pierce said Tuesday afternoon. “I’m not one to really listen to timelines, that’s more for you guys to hear, and I have an idea about it. Players have come back quicker (from this injury), as well.

“I’m pretty sure it’s four or less. They didn’t say it’s something that’s going to be real lengthy. It has to heal, obviously, to be able to play. It will still probably be another week until I’m out of the walking boot.”

Pierce said he won’t need surgery on the foot.

The club has placed him on a one-game injured list for Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Argonauts at Rogers Centre (6:30 p.m., TSN, CJOB). The team does have the option to move him to the nine-game injured list for the rest of the first half of the season.

Alex Brink gets the start for the winless Bombers against the Argos, who have just one win in three tries this season. Joey Elliott and Justin Goltz serve as the backups.

Pierce was injured on a sack by Edmonton defensive tackle Ted Laurent in the first quarter of Friday’s 42-10 loss to the Eskimos Friday night. The play looked innocent enough – Laurent chased a scrambling Pierce out of the pocket and tackled him around the ankles – but the takedown immediately put the quarterback out of commission for the rest of the evening.

After the game, Pierce had his left foot in a walking boot and was using a crutch.

It was the second time in three games Pierce has been unable to finish a game this season, and the 22nd time he’s left a game in 58 career starts. In the season-opening loss to the B.C. Lions, Pierce was forced to leave the game with a leg injury.

Pierce, who signed a three-year extension with the club in the off-season, has been forced from the game with an injury in nine of his 24 starts with Winnipeg. All told, he’s missed a total of 15 out of 39 games in his two-plus seasons as the Bombers starting quarterback.
