WINNIPEG — The lone American in the field, Thomas Strandemo, held onto his lead today at the Manitoba men’s amateur golf championship, but things at Glendale are decidedly more bunched up at the halfway point.
Strandemo, the 18-year-old Minnesota native who lives in Fargo and plays out of Oxbow Country Club, carded a one-over-par 73 today to stand at three-under 141 after 36 holes of the event.
Behind him, many of the expected contenders are lurking, including three-time former champion Garth Collings of Breezy Bend. Collings was 71 for the second straight day to pull in at two-under 142.
Another shot back is Southwood’s Bryce Barr, who hung in there for a 73 today, still two shots back of the leader.
That trio will be Wednesday’s final group for Round 3.
The logjam that comes after the three players under par has at least another nine players within six shots of the lead, including defending champ Jesse Skelton of Breezy Bend (72 for 146) and Tuesday’s comeback player of the day Myles Sullivan of Pine Ridge.
Sullivan, the 2011 Manitoba Junior champ, rebounded from a forgettable 80 on opening day with the amateur’s best score so far, five-under 67 today, to join the group at plus-three 147.
The cut comes tonight with the low 60 players and ties advancing to Rounds 3 and 4 Wednesday and Thursday at Glendale.
