Derek East of St. Charles is the only Manitoba golfer to advance to the final rounds of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Golf Championship today and Friday.
After thunderstorms delayed play for more than three hours, East was left on the course in his second round when darkness fell Wednesday night but returned to Camelot Golf and Country Club this morning to finish up a one-over-par 73 that has him easily through the 36-cut.
East begins today’s third round at even-par 144 and sits 10 shots off the lead of Ontario’s Stephane Dubois. The cut came at three-over 147, for 70 players.
The other eight Manitoba players missed that mark, including Pine Ridge’s Bobby Wiebe and Southwood’s Charlie Boyechko, who were also left on the course Wednesday. Wiebe shot a second-round 77 at club do golf Outaouais to finish 10-over, while Boyechko was 74 at Camelot to finish 11-over.
