The silly old bear statue has moved.
The statue of Winnie the Bear and Lt. Harry Colebourn which has graced the Assiniboine Park Zoo since 1992, is now in the park’s Nature Playground.
“With high volumes of traffic in the Nature Playground, the majority of them being children, it seemed like a natural fit,” Margaret Redmond, president and CEO of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy, said today in a statement.
The bronze statue was donated by the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg and had been placed outside the zoo’s Kinsmen Discovery Centre.
The statue, created by artist William Epp, commemorates the story of Winnipeg’s Colebourn, who found a bear in northwestern Ontario while on his way to fight in the First World War. While overseas he donated the bear to the London Zoo where author A. A. Milne took his son Christopher Robin to see it and then used it as the inspiration for his stories about Winnie the Pooh.
