Violent offender set to be released under special conditions

A violent criminal who still poses a major risk to public safety will be saddled with special conditions when he walks out of prison next week.

Vernon Hamilton is set to be released on Sept. 20 after serving every second of an eight-year prison term. He appeared in court Thursday for a Crown application to impose a Criminal Code Section 810 peace bond against him.

Hamilton, 28, consented to the order which includes numerous conditions:

• a nightly curfew of 10 p.m.,
• order to abstain from alcohol and
• requirement to attend counselling and treatment programs.

Any breaches would be grounds for additional charges that would likely put him back behind bars.

Hamilton has spent much of his time in segregation at the maximum-security Kingston Penitentiary in Ontario, where officials say he has done little to rehabilitate himself. He has a lengthy history of convictions prior to his most recent offence.

Hamilton admitted to break-and-enter, committing robbery, and aggravated assault stemming from a January 2006 attack on Agnes Avenue.

The 71-year-old resident was surprised in his home by two intruders and repeatedly beaten and stabbed, court was told.

The victim suffered extensive injuries, including permanent blindness in one eye and severe abdominal damage that has required several surgeries. He can no longer live on his own and must use a colostomy bag.

Hamilton was sentenced in May 2007 to 64 months in prison, in addition to 16 months of time already served which was given-double time credit of 32 months.

Hamilton told court Thursday he intends to live in Winnipeg upon regaining his freedom.
