A Winnipeg couple has been charged for their alleged involvement in the abduction of the Maryk children four years ago.
Winnipeg police said this morning that Darlene McKay, 53, and Bradley McKay, 48, have each been charged with two counts of abduction by concealment and two counts of obstructing justice.
Dominic and Abby Maryk were located in Mexico in May, nearly four years after they went missing. Police believe their father, Kevin Maryk, abducted the children, then seven and five years old, with the help of several individuals.
The children have since been reunited with their mother, Emily Cablek.
Maryk and a co-accused, Robert Groen, were taken into custody by Mexican officials after the children were located.
Groen was extradited back to Canada July 19 and returned to Winnipeg the next day. He faces charges of conspiracy to commit the indictable offence of abduction and failing to comply with the conditions of an undertaking. He is being held in custody.
A process is underway to extradite Maryk, who remains in custody in Mexico.
Darlene and Bradley McKay are the parents of Cody McKay, Maryk’s nephew, who is also alleged to have been involved in the children’s abduction. There is an outstanding arrest warrant for McKay’s arrest.
Police would not detail what they believe to be McKay’s parents’ involvement in the abduction, but said the couple’s arrest was an important piece of the investigation.
“They are pieces of a very large puzzle that members of the missing person’s unit are slowing putting together,” WPS spokesman Patrol Sgt. Wally Antoniuk said, adding the last piece will be the arrest of the McKay’s son, Cody McKay.
